Description

How to make tender hamburger steaks with onion gravy and creamy mashed potatoes that create the perfect cozy weeknight comfort meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lbs ground beef, 80/20 blend
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs, plain
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Onion Gravy

  • 2 large onions, sliced thin
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth, low sodium
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Prep Potatoes: Peel and cube potatoes, then boil in salted water for 15-20 minutes until fork-tender. Drain well and mash with warm milk and butter until smooth and creamy.
  2. Form Steaks: Mix ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, diced onion, garlic, salt, and pepper in large bowl. Shape into 6 oval patties about 3/4-inch thick for even cooking.
  3. Brown Meat: Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown hamburger steaks 3-4 minutes per side until golden crust forms. Transfer to 9×13 baking dish.
  4. Make Gravy: In same skillet, cook sliced onions in butter until softened and golden. Sprinkle flour over onions, cook 2 minutes, then gradually whisk in broth and seasonings.
  5. Assemble Bake: Pour onion gravy over hamburger steaks in baking dish. Dollop mashed potatoes on top and spread gently to cover most of the surface area.
  6. Bake Golden: Bake at 375°F for 25-30 minutes until potatoes are golden brown on top and gravy bubbles around edges. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the meat mixture or steaks will be tough and dense.
  • Store covered in refrigerator for up to 3 days – flavors improve overnight.
  • Substitute instant mashed potatoes if short on time, just use less liquid.
  • Serve with crusty bread to soak up the delicious onion gravy.
  • Double the gravy recipe if your family loves extra sauce on everything.
  • Let rest 5 minutes before serving to prevent burns from hot gravy.
