Description

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)
  • 4 oz semisweet chocolate
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for ganache)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine flour and baking powder; gradually add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk.
  5. Pour batter into two greased 9-inch round cake pans.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. To make custard, heat milk in a saucepan until just boiling. In a bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks. Slowly whisk in hot milk, then return to the saucepan.
  9. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  10. Once cooled, fill one layer of cake with custard, top with the second layer, and refrigerate.
  11. For the ganache, melt chocolate and butter together in a bowl over hot water. Stir until smooth.
  12. Pour ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
